OTTAWA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- China is making great efforts to address the pollution issue for the 2008 Olympic Games, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said Wednesday.

"I can't hide the fact that there is today a danger of atmospheric pollution in Beijing, but our Chinese friends are doing tremendous efforts to reduce this," Rogge said during his visit to Vancouver, which will host the 2010 Winter Games.

"This is going to have good results not only for August in Beijing but for the decades to follow," he said, quoted by Reuters.

Rogge also hailed Chinese efforts to plant more trees, switch heavy-polluting plants from coal to natural gas as well as a plan to take millions of cars off roads to clean up the air in Beijing for the Aug. 8-24 Games.

Olympic host Beijing and its five surrounding provinces have earlier pledged to take measures to cut dust, vehicle exhaust and industrial pollution emission, with the aim to ensure the air quality for the Olympics and Paralympics.
